Confetti Abelia - Variegated Semi-Evergreen Flowering Shrub | 3-4 ft, Individual Plant

Add year-round visual interest to your landscape with this stunning variegated shrub that delivers continuous blooms and colorful foliage through three seasons. The Confetti Abelia is a compact, semi-evergreen shrub featuring cream-edged green leaves that turn brilliant shades of orange, red, and purple in fall. This exceptional flowering shrub has become a designer favorite for mixed borders and foundation plantings. With its fragrant white tubular flowers and striking variegated foliage, the Confetti Abelia creates dynamic color combinations that evolve throughout the growing season. The delicate honey-scented blooms appear from late spring through fall, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds while the colorful leaves provide stunning autumn display before persisting through mild winters. Unlike solid green abelias that can appear monotonous, these variegated cultivars provide multi-season interest with foliage that actually intensifies in color as temperatures cool.

Why You'll Love the Confetti Abelia

Multi-Season Color: Variegated cream and green foliage transforms to brilliant orange-red fall colors, making this the perfect choice for landscapes needing year-round visual interest beyond just flowering periods.

Continuous Blooms: Plant 4-5 feet apart for hedge plantings or 3-4 feet for mixed borders, and they quickly establish into rounded, graceful shrubs. These variegated abelias have earned recognition as one of the most reliable flowering shrubs for extended bloom periods.

Pollinator Friendly: Fragrant tubular white flowers bloom from late spring through fall, attracting butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Once established, these semi-evergreen shrubs provide important late-season nectar when many other flowers have finished.

Low-Maintenance Versatility: A adaptable landscaping choice due to its tolerance of various soil conditions and minimal pruning requirements - perfect for busy gardeners who want maximum impact with consistent performance.

Confetti Abelia Details

  • Botanical Name: Abelia × grandiflora 'Confetti'
  • Type: Semi-evergreen flowering shrub
  • Mature Size: 3–4 ft tall × 4–5 ft wide
  • Growth Rate: Moderate — 8–12 inches per year
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: Well-drained; adaptable to clay, loam, or sandy soil
  • Water: Moderate; drought tolerant once established
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 6, 7, 8, 9

Growing Conditions

Soil Adaptability: Thrives in well-draining soils ranging from slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.5) including clay, loam, or sandy conditions. However, consistently moist but well-draining soil produces the best foliage color and avoid waterlogged conditions that can stress the plant.

Light Requirements: Performs best in full sun to partial shade (4-6+ hours daily) with morning sun preferred for optimal variegation. In hot climates, some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch while maintaining good flowering.

Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 6-9, making it suitable for most temperate and subtropical regions with some leaf drop expected in colder areas of its range.

Care Instructions

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry periods, though mature plants show good drought tolerance. Deep, infrequent watering promotes strong root development and better stress tolerance.

Pruning: Light pruning in late winter or early spring maintains shape and removes any winter-damaged growth. Can be shaped as desired, but avoid heavy pruning which reduces flowering potential.

Fertilizing: Apply balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering throughout the season, though these adaptable shrubs perform well without heavy feeding.

Landscaping Uses

Versatile Applications: Confetti Abelia's versatility makes it suitable for: mixed shrub borders, foundation plantings, informal hedges, container gardening, butterfly gardens, slope stabilization, and transitional landscape areas.

Foundation Excellence: Its moderate size and multi-season interest make it ideal for foundation plantings where year-round structure is needed without overwhelming windows or architectural features.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far apart should I plant Confetti Abelia for an informal hedge? Plant 3-4 feet apart (center to center) for a continuous informal hedge that will fill in naturally, or 4-5 feet apart for individual specimens that maintain distinct shapes while creating flowing garden borders.

When does Confetti Abelia bloom and how long do the flowers last? Fragrant white flowers begin appearing in late spring and continue through fall (5-6 months), with peak blooming during summer months when the honey-scented flowers are most attractive to pollinators.

Does the variegated foliage hold its color year-round? The cream and green variegation is most pronounced during the growing season, intensifying to brilliant orange-red fall colors before becoming more subdued in winter, though some foliage typically persists in zones 7-9.

Microfiber Has Come a Long Way
Color: 22 - Spa Blue, Size: Queen
I have one of those beds where the head and foot of the bed can be raised or lowered as needed, much like a hospital bed. Except in this case, the mattress is soft but supportive and very thick. If you measure the side from the top edge to the bottom edge of the mattress, it measures a bit over 12 inches. That means, if I want the mattress to actually stay in place it needs to have at least a few inches to tuck under, or it just pulls loose. Many sheets that advertise that they are "deep pocket" sheets often barely go around the mattress, and even clips don't help keep the bottom sheet on. It also means more difficulty in the first place to make the bed if I have to do it myself (I have a "hospital bed" for a reason). I did have two sets of sheets that I loved and were just deep enough to stay on fairly well, but I have had them for several years now, and they have started to get a bit thin in spots and the elastic on the fitted sheet is not as taut as before. Sheets are expensive, but I also have a sensitivity to rough and scratchy material, so the texture had to be something I wouldn't find irritating. The last time I bought "microfiber" sheets was probably when "microfiber" was a new thing, and it usually was some kind of knitted, stretchy material like a t-shirt, but had a tendency to pill badly after a few washings. Still, I needed sheets, and it was winter, and those stretchy knitted sheets were soft and warm, so I ordered two sets of the Extra Deep Queen Sheet Set--one in white, and the other in "spa blue". When they arrived, I was very surprised to see that the quality of the fabric actually mimicked very fine cotton sheets. They were brand new as expected, and they didn't smell or anything, but I do wash things like towels or sheets and some clothing before I use them. They weren't really dirty, so I just washed them in a small amount of detergent and cool water. The directions suggest gentle cycle, but I have a "bulky" setting on my washer that seems gentle enough on sheets but helps avoid issues like the load getting off balance in the tub. I dried it on the low, delicate setting with a sheet of fabric softener to cut down on static and because I wanted a nice scent. The sheets came out beautiful, and have since been used and washed again, and they so far, look and feel even more luxurious than before. I especially appreciate that the manufacturer but a label on the fitted sheet to indicate that the side that was to go on the top/bottom of the mattress. The sheets are VERY deep. More than I require, but now they stay on the bed, no matter how far up or down I move it, or how much I toss and turn. I also bought a set of sheets by another brand, but I really should have just paid the few dollars extra for another set of these. If you are used to those 800-count Egyptian Cotton or those fancy silk and bamboo blend sheets, you're probably going to hate these. But if you ever had to settle for sheets from Dollar General or Walmart, this is going to be a definite upgrade. (My favorite sheets from before I think I ordered online from Sears or Kohl's that were some kind of cotton and synthetic blend. ) Overall, for basic soft, comfortable sheets I can recommend these. They seem to be very warm, so I wonder how "breathable" they would be in the summer, but I tend to be very cold all the time anyway. I love these sheets so far. I'm tempted to order one more set if the other brand ends up being too annoying to deal with.

Perfect set of sheets
Color: 25 - Burgundy, Size: King
This set of sheets were perfect! They are soft and easy to put on our King size bed which has deep fitted corners. The price was great too!! The burgundy looks just like the picture. They are wrinkle resistant- I washed and dried them before using them for the first time and they were wrinkle free. They are not heavy in weight.

Great Sheets
Color: 35 - Lavender, Size: Queen
I really thought the sheets were really nice. I have been looking for good sheets that didn't cost and arm and a leg. The deep pockets are great. I have a mattress that has deep sides, plus I have a topper on that, so the sheets fit great! They are cooling and comfortable to sleep under. Also, I was able to get the color I wanted, lavender. I will be buying another set and do recommend them highly!

Good but not great purchase
Color: 02 - Antique White, Size: Queen, Color: 02 - Antique White, Size: Queen
The sheets are soft and fit the bed amazingly!! Downfall there was a rip in the fitted sheet at one seam. I had to mend it myself as I had to have a sheet to sleep on and a return would take too long. Also a few pieces of thread not properly secured. I am unsure if I will buy again but the pros are: Clean packaging Soft Comfortable

Most comfortable pillows for my back
Color: Navy, Size: 26x26 Inch
I have a really bad back along with sciatica so I use these pillows on my recliner chair, one for my back and one under my bottom. They make all the difference in the world. They are soft and squishy yet still offer support. They are a great value for sure. This blue color was about half the price of other colors with was fine with me because I put washable covers on them anyway. I frequently fall asleep on them. My dog loves when they accidentally fall on the floor because he curls up on them and falls asleep. He finds them very comfortable. I can't say enough good about these. They would be great on a bed or couch too or even as a floor cushion. They are high quality, well made pillows.
